Header and footer

Header and footer writes one line at the top and another at the bottom of the pages you choose. You can use placeholders that fill themselves in, such as the page number and the total, and set the horizontal alignment, size, colour and distance from the margin. All processing runs in your browser, without sending anything to a server.

How it works

Three steps, nothing to install.

The whole job happens on your computer, start to finish.

1

Choose the file

Drag the PDF into the tool window, or click to pick it.

2

Write the lines

Fill in the header, the footer, or both. Use placeholders for the page number.

3

Apply and download

Get the PDF with the lines written on the pages you chose.

How do I add the page number automatically?

With placeholders, which fill themselves in on every sheet. Write {n} for the page number, {total} for the page count and {ficheiro} for the file name. For example, writing "Page {n} of {total}" in the footer gives "Page 7 of 42" on page seven. Without placeholders, whatever you write appears identically on every page, which is rarely what a footer is for.

How is it different from the number pages tool?

The numbering tool does one thing and does it without questions: it writes the number at the bottom. This one lets you write whatever you want, top and bottom, with colour, size and position of your choosing. If you only need the number, the other one is faster.

Can I set only a footer, with no header?

You can. Leave the other field empty. What you cannot do is leave both empty: in that case there is nothing to do, and the tool says so instead of handing back an identical file.

Does it write on every page?

By default yes. The pages field takes ranges (2-10) and single numbers, if you want to skip the cover for example.

Your files never leave the browser. No PDF is sent to a server to have a header written on it.
Errors and limits

The tool refused my text because of a character.

This happens with emoji, arrows, and scripts outside Western Latin, such as Cyrillic, Greek or Chinese. The typeface in use cannot write them. What matters is what would happen if we did not refuse: the library raises no error, it silently swaps every unknown character for a question mark and saves the file anyway. You would only find out on opening the PDF and seeing "?" in the middle of the footer across two hundred pages. So the tool refuses and names the characters involved.

Which characters can it write?

Western Latin, which covers the accents used in Portuguese, Spanish, French, German and the Nordic languages, plus the euro sign. Cyrillic, Greek, CJK and emoji are refused rather than silently mangled. An automated test guards the accents, so that nobody "fixes" the emoji problem with a filter that would throw them away too.

My text was long and came out smaller than I asked for.

That is deliberate. When the line does not fit the page width, the tool reduces the font size until it does, down to a minimum of 4 points. The alternative would be letting the text run off the margin, with no warning, across a job of hundreds of pages. Below that minimum it refuses, because text you cannot read is no use.

The line landed on top of the page content.

Increase the distance from the margin. The default suits most documents, but anyone with tight margins needs more. The tool writes where it is told: it does not know where the page text ends.

Questions

Questions about headers and footers.

Do I need an account?

Yes. The account (magic link, no password) is needed for the subscription. This tool is part of the Premium subscription, EUR 1.99 a month, which removes the limits on every tool and adds OCR. Sign PDF opens on the free plan, with one signature a day.

Can I choose the typeface?

No. A standard typeface is used, which needs no embedding and keeps the file light.

Can it remove a header that is already there?

No. This tool adds, it does not remove. An existing header is part of the page content.

Are my files kept on your servers?

No. Since nothing is sent, nothing is kept outside your browser.

Document missing
its headers?

Open the tool and write them. Nothing to install, nothing sent anywhere.
