Add text

Add text writes a line wherever you say, on the pages you choose. You give the spot with two numbers, and pick the size, the colour and, if you want, an angle. It is for filling in a field on a printed form, putting a reference in a corner, or marking a document with a note. All processing runs in your browser.

How it works

Four steps, nothing to install.

The whole job happens on your computer, start to finish.

1

Choose the file

Drag the PDF into the tool window, or click to pick it.

2

Write the line

Type what you want to insert and choose which pages it appears on.

3

Say where it goes

Two numbers, counted from the top left corner. In millimetres, points or percentage.

4

Apply and download

Get the PDF with the text in place, and the rest of the page untouched.

Where are the coordinates counted from?

The TOP left corner of the page, like a screen: the first number goes right, the second goes down. The PDF format internally counts the other way, from the bottom up, but nobody thinks like that when looking at a sheet of paper. If you have worked with PDFs programmatically, this is the difference you will notice. The second number points at the top of the letters, not the line they sit on, so that writing zero puts the text against the top margin instead of half off the sheet.

Can I use percentage instead of millimetres?

You can, and it is what you want when the document has sheets of different sizes. 50 and 50 in percentage STARTS the text in the middle of any page, be it A4 or A3. Note that this is where the text begins and not its centre: the line runs from there to the right, and a long one may cross the margin and be refused.

How do I know where it will land before applying?

There is no preview. The practical way is to apply once with rough values, open the result and adjust.

What is the angle for?

For writing diagonally or vertically, along the margin for example. The rotation happens around the point where the text starts, not the centre of the line, which you need to allow for when positioning.

Your files never leave the browser. No PDF is sent to a server to have a line written on it.
Errors and limits

The tool refused because the text does not fit.

It refuses rather than shrinking, and that is deliberate. The coordinates and the size were written by you: if the tool reduced the font to make it fit, the alignment you worked out would be ruined without warning. Adjust the position or the size and apply again. Note that the check accounts for the angle: a line that fits horizontally may not fit at 90 degrees, because it then takes up the page height instead of the width.

It refused because of a character.

Emoji, arrows and scripts outside Western Latin cannot be written by the typeface in use. If we did not refuse, the library would silently swap them for question marks and save the file anyway, and you would only find out on opening the PDF. Portuguese and Spanish accents work without trouble.

Does this edit the text already in the PDF?

No. This tool ADDS text on top; it does not touch what is already there. Editing existing text in a PDF is a different and considerably harder problem, because the format stores positions rather than paragraphs.

The text landed on top of the page content.

The tool writes where it is told and does not know what is underneath. If the spot is taken, pick another.

Questions

Questions about adding text to a PDF.

Do I need an account?

Yes. The account (magic link, no password) is needed for the subscription. This tool is part of the Premium subscription, EUR 1.99 a month, which removes the limits on every tool and adds OCR. Sign PDF opens on the free plan, with one signature a day.

Can I choose the typeface?

No. A standard typeface is used, which needs no embedding and keeps the file light.

Is it for signing a document?

For a drawn signature or an image, use the Sign PDF tool, which has an editor of its own. This one writes text.

Are my files kept on your servers?

No. Since nothing is sent, nothing is kept outside your browser.

Document missing
a line?

Open the tool and write it. Nothing to install, nothing sent anywhere.
