How to add the image, step by step

Adding an image to a PDF takes under a minute:

1. Open the Add image tool and drag the PDF into the window, or click to pick it.
2. Choose the image: a PNG or a JPEG. A PNG with a transparent background keeps its transparency.
3. Say where and how big, two numbers for the position, counted from the top left corner, and the width, and press apply.
4. Download the PDF with the image placed on the pages you chose.

The position is given with two numbers, measured from the top left corner of the page, like a screen. The first number is the distance from the left margin and the second points at the top of the image. It is the same convention as the Add text tool, on purpose, so you do not have to think differently depending on which tool you are using.

You pick the width; the height follows on its own if you leave the keep proportions option on, which is how it comes. If you switch it off, the height becomes the image's own size in points, which can distort. If the position plus the size runs past the page margin, the tool refuses rather than shrinking: you chose the size, and changing it underneath would ruin what you worked out.

There is no preview. The practical way is to apply once with rough values, open the result and adjust.

Tips for adding an image

• A PNG with a transparent background stays transparent. It is the ideal format for putting a logo on a document with no white box around it.
• The image goes on top of the page content. To soften it, lower the opacity: 100 is solid, and 20 or 30 leaves the image nearly transparent, reading as a background that does not hide what is underneath.
• For a signature on a single sheet, use the Sign PDF tool. It has an editor where you drag the mark over the page; this tool places by coordinates, which pays off when the image goes on many pages at once.

The format is detected from the bytes, not the extension

The tool takes PNG and JPEG, and nothing else. The format is recognised from the file content, not from the name: a GIF or a WebP whose extension was changed to .png is still caught, with a message that explains what is going on, instead of failing with an internal error. If your image is another format, convert it first.

If the tool says the image is invalid, there are two causes: either the file is not a PNG or a JPEG, whatever the extension claims, or it is damaged. Check that the image opens normally in another program before using it here.
