Overlay PDF draws the first page of one file (the layer) on top of every page of another (the base), corner-aligned at the layer's original size. It is for applying a stamp, a fixed header drawn in another program, or an approval seal to a whole document without redrawing it page by page. All processing runs in your browser.

Does the layer adjust to the size of each base page?
No, and this is the most important thing to know about this tool. The layer is drawn at its ORIGINAL size, corner-aligned at the bottom left. A layer smaller than the base leaves space around it; a bigger layer spills off the sheet (and what spills off stays in the file, it just stops being visible, the same as with margin cropping). There is no automatic scaling or centring: if you need the layer to match the base exactly, prepare it beforehand with the Page size tool.
Why only the layer's first page, and not all of them?
Because this tool's use case is a REPEATED layer (a stamp, a header, a seal), the same across every page of the base. If each base page needed a different layer, that would be a one-to-one matching operation, and that is a different tool with a different promise.
What does the transparency field do?
It lowers the layer's opacity to 50%, so the content of the page underneath stays readable through it. Without transparency, the layer is drawn at full opacity and can fully cover whatever is in the same spot.
The tool refused because I only picked one file.
This tool always needs two: the base and the layer. Pick both files before overlaying.
The layer had more than one page. What happened to the rest?
They were ignored. Only the layer's first page is embedded and drawn; if you need different pages in different positions, this is not the right tool for that case.
The tool refused because the layer was blank.
A page with no marks drawn on it at all (no text, no line, no image) has no content to embed, and the PDF format does not allow overlaying nothing. Check that the page you picked really has something drawn on it.
Alignment is not smart: what does that mean in practice?
It means the tool does not try to guess where the layer should go. It always sticks to the bottom-left corner, at its original size. For any other position, prepare the layer with that spacing already built in before using it here.

Do I need an account to overlay a PDF?

Can the base and the layer have different page sizes?
Yes. The layer is drawn at its own size over every page of the base, regardless of whether the sizes match.
Does this merge two PDFs into one, one after the other?
No. For that there is the Merge PDF tool, which concatenates documents instead of drawing one on top of the other.
Are my files kept on your servers?
No. Since nothing is sent, nothing is kept outside your browser.
