Does the generated Word file keep the tables, images and formatting of the PDF?
No. The tool reads the PDF text and writes one paragraph per line, into a plain .docx. Tables turn into running text, images are not included, and columns or styles from the original document are not rebuilt. It is a text extraction that runs entirely in your browser, without sending the file to a server: the trade you make for keeping everything local and private is giving up the layout reconstruction that services like Adobe Acrobat or Word Online do after receiving the file on their servers. If you need to keep tables and images faithful to the original, this is not the right tool for that case.
Does it work with a scanned PDF?
No. A scanned PDF is a photograph of the page, with no text underneath to extract. This tool does not perform optical character recognition: once it detects there is no extractable text, it warns you instead of generating an empty .docx file. For that kind of document, go through the OCR tool first: it recognises the text in the image and gives back a searchable PDF, which you then bring here. OCR is the one tool on the site that needs a subscription, and what it returns is only as good as the scan.
Which kind of PDF gives the best result?
PDF files created from a text document (Word, Google Docs, a directly exported report), with a single simple column of text and no tables or complex images. The simpler the original layout, the more faithful the extracted text. Contracts, letters and running-text reports convert well; brochures, forms with columns and illustrated catalogues lose structure in the process.

Why does the text come out with sentences jumbled, especially in a document with columns?
Because extraction groups text purely by each block's vertical position on the page, without telling columns apart. In a document with two side-by-side columns, like a newspaper or magazine, the result mixes fragments from both columns in the order the PDF stores them, not in visual reading order.
Why does opening the PDF in this tool give an error?
Most likely because the file is already password protected, this tool cannot open encrypted PDFs, or the file itself is corrupted and not a valid PDF at all. Check that it opens normally in another reader before uploading it here to convert.

Do I need to create an account to convert a PDF to Word?
