Repair PDF

Repair PDF rebuilds the internal structure of a damaged document: the reference table and file ending many readers require to open it. A fresh copy is saved from whatever could be recovered. It is not magic: content bytes that are genuinely destroyed stay lost after repair. All processing runs in your browser.

How it works

Two steps, nothing to install.

The whole job happens on your computer, start to finish.

1

Choose the file

Drag the damaged PDF into the tool window, or click to pick it.

2

Download the repaired copy

Get a fresh document, rebuilt from whatever could be recovered.

What actually breaks in a PDF?

Almost always it is the STRUCTURE and not the content: the cross-reference table that tells a reader where each object sits inside the file, or the trailer at the end that closes the document. An interrupted save, an incomplete transfer or a buggy program leave that table misaligned, and the reader refuses to open it even though the content inside is intact.

So does this always recover the document?

No, and it is the most important thing to know. Repair rebuilds the HOUSE from what exists; if the bytes of an image or a page are genuinely destroyed, they stay destroyed after repair. What this tool handles well is the most common case, which is structure, not content.

Does this open a password protected PDF?

It tries to rebuild the structure around what exists, but it does not decrypt content without the right password. If the goal is removing the encryption, the right tool is Unlock PDF.

Do I lose anything when repairing a PDF that already opened fine?

You should not lose anything visible: the page content stays the same. What changes is the internal structure, which ends up clean even if it already was.

Your files never leave the browser. No PDF is sent to a server to be repaired.
Errors and limits

The tool says the PDF cannot be repaired.

It means it was not even possible to build a minimal model of the document: no pages found, or the structure destroyed to a point with nowhere to start from. A file like that is not really a valid PDF, or it is corrupted at a level that needs disk recovery, beyond what any PDF tool can do.

I repaired it and a page is still blank or errors out.

It is a sign that the problem was in that page's content and not in the file's overall structure. The structure around it turned out fine, but whatever was missing on that specific page does not come back.

The file is protected and damaged at the same time.

The tool tries to rebuild the structure anyway, but the result may still be encrypted. In that case, after repairing, use the Unlock PDF tool with the right password.

The file has too many pages and the tool refuses before even trying.

Documents with a very large number of pages hit a safety limit before spending too much memory. The message states the limit.

Questions

Questions about repairing a PDF.

Do I need an account to repair a PDF?

Yes. The account (magic link, no password) is needed for the subscription. This tool is part of the Premium subscription, EUR 1.99 a month, which removes the limits on every tool and adds OCR. Sign PDF opens on the free plan, with one signature a day.

Does it work with any kind of damage?

It works well with structural damage, which is the most common case. It does not recover content bytes that are genuinely gone.

Do I need to know what was wrong with the PDF?

No. The tool attempts the rebuild without needing to know the exact cause of the problem.

Are my files kept on your servers?

No. Since nothing is sent, nothing is kept outside your browser.

opens well?
